Thank You, Captain Obvious :Tim Burton Will Direct Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

Deadline is reporting that Tim Burton will follow up his adaptations of Dark Shadows (for Warner Bros.) and his own Frankenweenie (for Disney) with yet another adaptation, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I haven't read the book by author Ransom Riggs (if that is his real name), but I'm a fan of the X-Men-ish title and the description provided by Amazon is definitely intriguing:

"It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow--impossible though it seems--they may still be alive."

The novel's trailer (which is a fad I'm a huge fan of) frames the above narrative in the context of a grandfather telling his grandson the story of the titular "peculiar children," like a less saccharine take on The Princess Bride. With the inherent weirdness of an orphanage that houses invisible, fire-wielding, telepathic, and levitational children couched in father-figure storytelling, this is certainly up Tim Burton's goth-ic alley. Though, with his recent track record, it's possible Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children could end up more like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland than either Big Fish or Edward Scissorhands.

'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' will be directed by Tim Burton

Tim Burton, who's known for his spooky movies, will take on the eerie tale of a boy who explores the ruins of an abandoned children's home.

Spooky movie master Tim Burton will take on a film adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ young adult novel “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” Word and Film reported.
The 2011 novel follows teenager Jacob, who begins to explore the ruins of the titular home, located on an island near Wales, and learns more about the children who lived there and why they were separated from society. Eerie photographs are interspersed with the text.

Burton is known for strange and scary stories, having directed films such as the animated 2012 film “Frankenweenie,” 2012’s “Dark Shadows,” and 2007’s “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” among others. The movie is being released by 20th Century Fox and the studio is aiming for a July 2015 opening.

The script is being adapted by writer Jane Goldman, who recently penned the screenplays for the 2012 film “The Woman in Black.” She’s also behind the scripts for “X-Men: First Class” and its upcoming sequel, films which “Peregrine” fans know share similarities with the story of Riggs’ novel.
No word on whether Burton’s frequent stars Johnny Depp or partner Helena Bonham-Carter will be appearing in the film

Tim Burton Up For ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children’

There’s no denying that Tim Burton has a monopoly on movies that are Gothically kooky and whimsically creepy in design. Hence why it’s not surprising to hear that 20th Century Fox wants to hire the filmmaker on as director for the literary adaptation, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Dylan Clark and Peter Chernin (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) along with Jeno Topping (the Charlie’s Angels film series) are set to produce the literary project. Burton, should he sign on as director, would presumably also serve as a co-producer.

5 Superhero Roles Almost Given to Someone Else

Fox and Chernin Entertainment acquired the rights to Ransom Rigg’s source material earlier this year. Deadline is reporting that, should Burton agree to helm Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, he would “be involved” in recruiting a scriber for the project.

Given that the filmmaker tends to prefer working with the same individuals over and over, chances are good that someone like John August (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Frankenweenie) could be the man Burton would select to handle that job.

Here is an official description of Ransom Rigg’s original novel

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience.

As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

Tim Burton to Direct Ransom Riggs’ 'Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children'

Looks like Tim Burton has set his big eyes on a new project. As previously reported in April, Burton’s IMDB page has had his name lined up for several upcoming spooky projects, but one has finally been verified: the adaptation of Ransom Riggs’ Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Riggs' story follows a teenage boy who discovers an abandoned children’s home on a Welsh island, only to then uncover the hidden secrets within its walls. The novel makes use of eerie historical photographs that Riggs collected over the years. Each photo depicts a character that the boy meets along his way.

Aiming for a July 2015 release, the script will be penned by screenwriter Jane Goldman, who, aside from her work on the screenplay for “Kick Ass” and the “X-Men” franchise, has previously tackled adaptations of Susan Hill's The Woman in Black  and Neil Gaiman's Stardust.

Riggs has a sequel completed, Hollow City, slated for January 2014 (no film deals have been reported for the sequel). Burton is currently in pre-production on “Big Eyes,” a 1960s-based biographical film about artists Walter and Margaret Keane. The cast for the film has some brand new faces for Burton’s body of work, recently acquiring Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, and Danny Huston.

Casting for ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ has begun

Backstage.Com has begun searching for the perfect young man to play Jacob, who is of course the lead in the YA-Novel ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ by Ransom Riggs

20th Century Fox is currently seeking talent for the Tim Burton-directed feature film, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” or “Miss P.

Based on the young adult novel of the same name, the story tells “the tale of a boy who, following a horrific family tragedy, follows clues that take him to an abandoned orphanage on a Welsh island.”

The film will be directed by Tim Burton and distributed by 20th Century Fox. Filming is set to start this August in London, UK. Casting auditions for Jacob have begun! Ransom himself said in his blog that he would love it if the talent cast as Jacob was some “unknown, some wild, untested talent plucked from obscurity, a face no one knows … yet.” and I agree! Personally myself while reading Miss P I always pictured everything animated, like s hauntingly beautiful stop motion animation (think Coraline or Nightmare Before Christmas), but that isn’t the case. Jacob, Miss Peregrine, Olive, Emma, Millard, and the rest of the peculiars will all be full flesh and blood people, and I can’t wait to see what faces fill this cast.

Well-known, unknown, or even someone you know… who do you want to bring Jacob Portman to life? Let us know in the comments below!
